These days, vehicles with automatic transmissions are the norm, making up about 96% of all cars. The sophistication of our modern transmissions makes driving far easier and more pleasurable. But automatic transmissions are also more expensive to repair if a problem is allowed to develop. So if you notice any of the following signs of trouble, visit your local Ford Service Department for transmission repair right away.

You Hear Grinding While Shifting

If transmission fluid has lessened or thickened, the myriad moving parts inside your transmission might start grinding against each other without proper lubrication. You’re likely to hear this grinding when you shift gears, perhaps accompanied by unusual vibrations as the gears struggle.

Low fluid can usually be remedied easily enough, but grinding might also point to more serious issues inside the planetary gear system. It’s best to have a professional inspect a grinding gearbox without delay.

You Hear Whining While Shifting

Whining sounds are another common indicator of a problematic automatic transmission. A variety of potential issues can lead to humming and whining noises. It might be low transmission fluid, a worn-out fluid pump, or a slipping clutch.

If the whining happens while you’re in gear, the sound might stem from a malfunctioning torque converter. If you only hear it while shifting gears, you may have worn-down gears. And if it happens when you’re reversing, then a clogged fluid line might be to blame.

Your Gears Seem Hesitant to Shift

When a transmission starts to go awry, you may notice a strange delay when shifting. This delay feels like a few seconds pass before the new gears properly lock into place.

Your engine may also start revving unexpectedly while it struggles to complete the gear shift. This problem could be caused by clogged transmission fluid filters, faulty solenoids, rounded-out gears, clutch issues, or low fluid.

Your Transmission Fluid Is Leaking

A common culprit with transmission issues is low or aging transmission fluid. The fluid is so essential to the proper functioning of a transmission that any reduction in its function can rapidly lead to all kinds of gearbox trouble.

If a transmission’s pan gasket, driveshaft seal, or cooling line springs a leak, your transmission fluid will rapidly drop to dangerous levels. So if you detect any of the above signs of trouble, check first for a leaking dark red fluid under your car. And if you spot a leak, have it fixed before you continue driving.

Flush Transmission Fluid Often at Your Local Ford Dealer

The recommended intervals for flushing transmission fluid vary a great deal depending on your car’s model. It’s generally recommended for manual transmission drivers to flush their fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

The fluid in automatic transmissions can usually last far longer before requiring a change: anywhere from 30,000 to 150,000 miles. It’s best to check your owner’s manual for the recommended interval for your Ford model, and then stick to that schedule to avoid gearbox problems.
